Entrepreneurship

Being your own boss is the dream for many, but what do you have to do to make it a reality? Can anyone start a business or does it take a certain type of person or special skillset? Here we uncover the who, what and when of starting your own business.

Do You Have Experience?

As we discussed in our previous blog post, What Experience Do You Need To Run A Business?, many people start their own business with very little experience in the field they are going into. Lacking experience in the industry you’d like to break into isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Entrepreneurs have many skills and it’s likely that many of the skills you already possess will come in handy. You can always learn new skills, too. The important thing is that you play to your own strengths and that you’re honest with yourself in regards to the things you can do and the things you may need a little help with.

Do You Have The Right Qualities?

Are you organised, positive, passionate, forward-thinking, and great at solving problems? These are all important traits for entrepreneurs. Nobody is going to go into business knowing exactly what they are doing – there is always going to be a learning curve. But being able to think practically and positively when faced with a  problem is going to serve you very well, and being organised enough to keep track of everything is very important. The best thing you can do is identify your weaknesses and take steps towards improving them – rather than living in denial and letting potential problems build up.

Is It The Right Time?

Even if you have the experience, qualities and mindset to start your own business, it might not be the right time for you to make the leap. While you shouldn’t wait until the planets align or let fear of failure run your life, there are a few factors that should be in place before you start printing business cards. For example, your finances, your home life, and the amount of time and energy you are able to spend on your business will all play a part in your decision. It may be that you will make a great entrepreneur, but not just yet. Or you may decide that now is the perfect time to get started! To help you make the decision, find out more in our blog post, When Is The Right Time To Start Your New Business?

Do You Have A Business Plan?

No matter who you are or what your experience is, a business plan can help you to make your start-up a success. You could have the best new product idea in the world, but if you don’t execute it well, you’re not going to get very far. A well-written business plan will help you to build a business that stands the test of time – whether you’re new to your field or have years of experience.
