How Websites Should Be Built!

Business Planning is key to success

It has become accepeted that a web presence is vital to success. Many companies have responded to this realisation and have secured themselves a website as quickly, and cost effectivly as possible.

The problem is, web design by its very nature is difficult to understand, and unless you speak several computer languages and keep yourself up to date with the latest technological developments you are going to find it hard, if not impossible to be absolutly certain you're getting the best value for money.

Believe it or not, the way a website is built and the very way the code is structured, can have tremendous implications for the success, or otherwise of your web presence.

I hope that some of the information on this page will help you to make the right choices when deciding on how (or who) to build your site.

Tables are dead ?

When the internet was first conceived, it was meant simply as a method of sharing information, and it was written almost exclusively in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).

It was never originally designed to play streaming media, allow massive file downloads, or even to "look nice". Tables were a means of displaying data and organising information on the immature World Wide Web.

As the internet grew in popularity, a demand for attractive, interestingly designed sites developed, and unfortunatly there was only one way of delivering the type of sites that people wanted.

Tables began to be used as a tool for layout. If you look at almost any website you can, with a little imagination see how the different sections could be held within the cells of a table.

The problem with this use of tables is twofold:

So, what then is the answer?

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

Prior to CSS, nearly all of the presentational attributes of HTML documents were contained often repeatedly, within the HTML. CSS allows authors to move much of that information to a separate stylesheet resulting in considerably simpler HTML markup.

By seperating the design and information aspects of a web site, we can increase its speed, and boost its performance in search engines.

Every site that I build (including this one) is founded on the principles of CSS, and every effort is taken to ensure that your site will fit the standars set by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).

If you are serious about making the internet work for you, then make sure the first question you ask any prospective web designer is:

If the answer is Tables, find yourself another designer, as tables should only be used for holding and displaying tabular data, price lists and the like.

If you're worried about your current site, I would be happy to take a look at it and provide you with some free advice on what you should be asking your current designer to do for you.
